Grand Tour of the North Day 16 Fort George

Today I visited Fort George one of the most outstanding fortifications I have seen. It was built in the wake of the 1745-6 Jacobite Rising as part of the effort by George 111's government to ensure that the Highland Clans would never rise in support of the exiled Stuart dynasty.
The fort was completed 1769  & by that time the Highlands were peaceful.
2,000 soldiers were garrisoned.
The British Army still use Fort George The Queens Highlands. It's used for training & continues to serve the needs of the British Army.
Situated in the Governor's

r house is the Highlanders Museum with very interesting displays from all the different Highlander regiments, now of course amalgamated into Queen's own Highlander regiment. Display on Northern Ireland troubles.
A very interesting display regarding Battle of Waterloo & Napoleonic which the Cameron Highlanders  (1793-1914) fought in.
This is a truly fantastic site to visit the sheer size & location on the Moray Firth, it's truly astounding. Worthy of a visit.
