Today's trip was most enjoyable & I was blessed with good weather, lots of sunshine which I needed for today journey to Stonehaven & Dunnottar
Castle 2 miles along the coast from Stonehaven Harbour.
I had a choice of bus or train, but decided on the train even though there is a
15-20 minutes walk down to the town & the bus takes you in to the market place.
It's a small town with the market place being the heart of it all...regarding the shopping. The other being the harbour area. Interestingly it has 2 harbours
& both fall of pleasure boats. Sadly only a couple fishing boats work out of the
harbour these days. I came across an amazing little restaurant it had been lovingly restored to its Art Deco glory. CARRON RESTAURANT I had lunch there, smoked salmon fishcakes, so delightful.
From the harbour I took the coastal path to Dunnottar Castle 2 miles down the coast. On the up there are fantastic views of the harbour. Half way from the harbour & castle is a monument dedicated to the fallen of Stonehaven during
the first & second world wars. Worthy of respect. From the monument you
Get a glimpse of the castle & it's size. As you get closer you can see my it's called Scotland's best ruined castle... It's magnificent!!
You enter the castle by decending from the footpath down on to concrete steps to the bottom then you climb back up the entrance, shame there wasn't a bridge.
Once you're in there are many ruined buildings to explore.
The dinning Hall is the only room that has partly restored with its panelled ceiling.
William Wallace attacked the castle 1272 when it was in the hands of the English
& did Quite a bit of damage. Mary Queen of Scots & King Charles11 stayed here.
Having spent a couple of hours at the castle I returned to the coastal path &
headed back to Stonehaven harbour & had a well deserved pint in the Ship
Having had a nice chat it was time to return to the station & head back to
Aberdeen.
Another splendid day & no rain.
